Is their a new law in regards to renting cars with a pre-paid visa debit card?
Me and my friend are going to Houston, TX on Thursday and she called to find out about the rental. As far as how much they need to hold on the card. Well, we were just going to use a prepay visa and the lady said that was fine, then she asked where we were coming from and my friend told her Michigan and she said that the law changed and out of towners have to use a Debit Card or an actual Credit card because people were stealing cars. Well, we have no intention of that. We both have these Rushcards but, you can only use that if you get your checks direct deposited onto the card. So, is this a new law or do you think it is just something that enterprise is doing?
In my experience with renting cars, I’ve always had to present an actual Credit Card – they usually don’t accept debit cards and they definitely don’t accept pre-paid credit cards (that’s not a real credit card, and it doesn’t even have the security of a debit card). There are rare circumstances when rental car agencies will accept a debit card, however, normally you need to put down a deposit of $300-500 AND provide your roundtrip flight information.
To check on the specific policy of your rental car company, try going to their website. Usually these companies are very clear about their payment/rental policies.
